history
The Rhön-Rennsteig-Sparkasse was founded in 1995. It was created through the merger of the former district savings banks Meiningen , Suhl and Schmalkalden. The name is composed of well-known landscapes in the business area of the Sparkasse. Rhön stands for the region around Meiningen with Grabfeld and Werratal, Rennsteig as the ridge path of the Thuringian Forest stands for the regions of Suhl and Schmalkalden. The three predecessor institutes each came into being in 1952 as part of the reorganization of the savings banks in the GDR .
At the end of 2018, the Sparkasse had 372 employees, including 18 trainees. It has 18 branches and branches and 20 self-service locations with a total of 112 ATMs as well as four competence centers (Meiningen, Suhl, Schmalkalden, Steinbach-Hallenberg) and two real estate centers (Meiningen, Suhl). The savings bank resides in the listed building of the former Deutsche Hypothekenbank Meiningen , a major bank that was founded in 1862 and was the first pure mortgage bank in Germany with the status of a private bank under state supervision and played a leading role here. The building was later used by Deutsche Bank , Kreissparkasse Meiningen , a main branch and the Thuringian branch of the State Bank of the GDR and, until 2000, the Deutsche Bundesbank . The Kreissparkasse Meiningen became the owner of the building in 1992 and had it redesigned and renovated from 1993 to 2003 under the direction of the architect Karsten Merkel.

The Rhön-Rennsteig-Sparkasse is active as a sponsor in various ways in its business area. It supports cultural and sporting events, is involved in the social field and promotes youth sports and the “Jugend musiziert” competition. The Sparkasse is a sponsor of the Thuringian Cabaret and the Thuringian Fairy Tale and Legends Prize .
Art gallery
The institute maintains an art gallery on two floors in the building of the Sparkasse headquarters in Meiningen, where works and photo exhibitions by and about well-known artists are shown. The highlights so far have been works by Armin Mueller-Stahl (2006), photo exhibitions that change every six months with the main theme "Women - Theater - Film", the actresses Marilyn Monroe (2010), Grace Kelly (2011), Audrey Hepburn (2011/12), Romy Schneider (2012), Sophie Marceau (2012/13), Brigitte Bardot (2013/14) and Marlene Dietrich (2014) and the exhibition “Ente gut - alles gut.” With works by well-known animators from the Walt Disney Company in 2015.
