history

The Rhön-Rennsteig-Sparkasse was founded in 1995. It was created through the merger of the former district savings banks Meiningen , Suhl and Schmalkalden. The name is composed of well-known landscapes in the business area of ​​the Sparkasse. Rhön stands for the region around Meiningen with Grabfeld and Werratal, Rennsteig as the ridge path of the Thuringian Forest stands for the regions of Suhl and Schmalkalden. The three predecessor institutes each came into being in 1952 as part of the reorganization of the savings banks in the GDR .

At the end of 2018, the Sparkasse had 372 employees, including 18 trainees. The building was later used by Deutsche Bank , Kreissparkasse Meiningen , a main branch and the Thuringian branch of the State Bank of the GDR and, until 2000, the Deutsche Bundesbank . The Kreissparkasse Meiningen became the owner of the building in 1992 and had it redesigned and renovated from 1993 to 2003 under the direction of the architect Karsten Merkel.
