history

Since 1824 the establishment of savings banks in the Electorate of Hesse was suggested by the municipalities. With the enactment of the Hessian municipal code, Paragraph 71 stipulated that the municipalities are responsible for the Sparkasse. On December 3, 1847, the Hessian government ordered the city of Borken to set up a savings bank. With a resolution of January 17, 1848, the city council laid the foundation for the establishment of a savings bank. The decision still required confirmation by the citizens' council, which took place on January 29th. The electoral government approved the statute for the savings bank on March 8, 1848 with the request that the city authorities assume the founding costs. But at first the Sparkasse did not come into being because the financial situation of the city of Borken was in a tense situation. Despite efforts on the part of the city to set up a savings bank, it took ten years to open the savings bank.

On March 15, 1859, the first deposit of 15 thalers was paid. By the end of the month, another 11 customers had followed 309 thalers.

The statutes of 1848 were replaced by new statutes on February 21, 1860, which now made it possible to grant loans to local citizens. They survived the German War and the annexation of the Electorate by Prussia until they were finally replaced by new statutes on November 23, 1880. These now allowed the deposit of up to 500 thalers and extended the checkout hours from one hour on two days a month to a working day opening time of three hours.
