Founding history

The two grand ducal district councils of the district of Gießen and the district of Grünberg - even at that time sometimes referred to as district councilors - invited those residents from both districts who were in favor of the city of Gießen with a letter of December 22, 1833 and through announcements in the "Kreisblatt and Wochenblatt für die Stadt Gießen" interested in the prosperity of the institute and wanted to join it as a member to found an "Association for the establishment of a credit and savings bank for the districts of Gießen and Grünberg" on January 6, 1834 in the inn "Zum Einhorn" in Gießen.

Initially, only private individuals were accepted as members, namely "men who were interested in the prosperity of the cause". The association included representatives of state authorities, mayors, community calculators, pastors, teachers and university professors as personal members as well as numerous men from various branches of the economy: the "tobacco manufacturers" Schirmer, Busch and Gail, and as members of the trade, mayors, rope makers, bookbinders, Shoemakers, locksmiths, millers, gunsmiths as well as merchants, booksellers, pharmacists and members of the trade. All of them (118 from the district of Gießen and 32 from the district of Grünberg) founded the “Spar- und Leihkasse for the districts of Gießen and Grünberg” on March 19, 1834. The first financial institute in Gießen immediately started its business operations at Braugasse 2. At the end of 1834 the “available funds” were already 20,234 guilders and 40 kreuzers.
