history

The bank was founded in June 1830. At that time the name was “Spar-Casse in the Landrathsviertel in Heppenheim”. It is one of the oldest savings banks in Hessen. In 1830 the currency in Hesse was the guilder and cruiser . The founders, Mayor Pirsch, City Councilor Müller and innkeeper Schunk from Heppenheim chose the legal form - the usual form of the association at the time. In July 1830, the cash desk was opened in Laudenbacher Tor 7. Checkout hours were only on Sundays after going to church. Until 1890, the savings bank was only open once a week. 13 member communities gave a binding guarantee to bear the losses incurred by the establishment. In 1834 61 municipalities became member and guarantee municipalities. In connection with the expansion of the area, the savings bank was given a new name. The institute used the name “Spar- und Leih-Casse in the district of Heppenheim” until 1903. The deposit portfolio on December 31, 1834 was a considerable sum of 83,035 guilders. In 1852 the administrative districts changed when a new Lindenfels district was founded. Other member communities came to the Spar- und Leih-Casse. After the checkout hours on Sundays were not enough, they were moved to Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In 1875 the currency was changed from guilder and kreuzer to marks and pennies . For the 50th anniversary in 1880, the deposit portfolio was 2,520,000.00 marks and was spread over 7,200 accounts and mortgage loans . In January 1890, the checkout hours were extended to a second day. In Darmstadt, an “Association of Savings and Loan Banks in the Grand Duchy of Hesse” was founded in 1896, which the Sparkasse joined in the same year and is still a member today. The association is now based in Frankfurt and Erfurt and is called the "Sparkassen- und Giroverband Hessen-Thüringen".

In 1903 the Spar- und Leih-Casse was given the name "District Savings Bank Heppenheim (Bergstrasse)" with state recognition. From 1909 the institute was open three days a week - Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Ten years later, a full-time director was hired and the counters opened daily. In 1927, booking machines and other auxiliary machines were purchased. In 1941 the Hessian government demanded the amalgamation of a number of Hessian savings banks. As a result, the Viernheim branch of the then Bezirkssparkasse Lorsch was connected to the Bezirkssparkasse Heppenheim. In 1942, the “Städtische Sparkasse Bad Wimpfen ” was also affiliated to the District Savings Bank Heppenheim, which ten years later was transferred to the Kreissparkasse Heilbronn in accordance with a decree of the Hessian banking supervisory authority in accordance with the new political affiliation . At the end of June 1955, the balance sheet total was already 23 million DM. In 1969 the company switched to electronic data processing, which was replaced in 1978 by a more powerful IT system. The first ATM was installed in the foyer of the main office in 1984. In 1993 a balance sheet total of two billion DM was achieved for the first time. The financial services concept was introduced in 1999. On the occasion of the 170th business year, the Sparkassenstiftung Starkenburg was founded in June 2000, and since November 1, 2000 the district savings bank Heppenheim has been called “Sparkasse Starkenburg - your adventure bank”. The balance sheet total reached the three billion mark for the first time. In 2001, senior citizens of the Sparkasse established a museum in the "Alte Sparkasse" at Laudenbacher Tor. In 2008 Sparkasse Starkenburg established itself as an environmental savings bank.

This is active both in the operational area and in a promoting manner (via the foundation grant application).
