The Lewis River is a 153 km long tributary of the Columbia River in the southwest of the US state Washington . It drains part of the Cascade Range north of the Columbia River.

In contrast to the nearby Lewis County and Fort Lewis , this river was not named after the explorer Meriwether Lewis , but after a settler named A. Lee Lewis, who was one of the first to settle at the mouth of the river.

Run

The Lewis River - sometimes also called the North Fork Lewis River - rises in the northeast of Skamania County west of Mount Adams in the Cascade Range, about 120 km northeast of Portland . It flows roughly to the southwest through the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in the middle of Skamania County on the southern side of Mount St. Helens . From here it forms the border between Cowlitz County in the north and Clark County in the south. For the last 15 km of its course it turns sharply south and then bends west to flow into the Columbia River opposite St. Helens , about 15 km north of Vancouver , Washington. There are only settlements on the lower reaches: Cougar , Ariel and Woodland - all on the right, northern bank and thus in Cowlitz County. In the area of the mouth of the Lewis River on the Columbia River lies the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge , a nature reserve of the type of a National Wildlife Refuge under the administration of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service .

Shortly before the confluence with the Columbia River, the river takes in the water from the East Fork Lewis River . The headwaters of the East Forks are located on the western side of the Lookout Mountains in Skamania County. The settlements of Heisson and La Center and Paradise Point State Park are located in Clark County on its westward course . The name South Fork Lewis River is also common for the East Fork.

Reservoirs on its course

The river is dammed several times for the purpose of generating electricity by hydropower , forming a chain of reservoirs Swift Reservoir , Yale Lake and Lake Merwin .

Hydrography

The United States Geological Survey operates several gauges in the catchment area of the Lewis River .

The annual average outflow of the Lewis River (1924-2006) at Ariel , about 30 km above the confluence with the Columbia River, is 135 m³ / s. The catchment area up to this point has an area of 1893 km². The highest observed discharge rate was around 3600 m³ / s on December 22, 1933, the lowest discharge was zero and was measured on several days between June 30 and July 9, 1931; the construction work on Merwin Dam prevented the outflow.

About 32 km above the confluence with the main arm is the level of the East Fork Lewis River at Heisson, whose catchment area covers 324 km² up to this point. The records there have taken place without interruption since September 1929. The annual average flow rate here is 21 m³ / s. The highest flow rate was observed on February 8, 1996 with 800 m³ / s, the lowest measured flow rate of 0.8 m³ / s was measured on November 3, 1935 and on September 27 and 28, 1967.
