Fort Lewis is a place and base of the US Army in Pierce County in the US state of Washington . With 33,000 soldiers and civilian workers and over 29,000 family members, the base is the largest and most important military garrison of the Army on the west coast of the United States . The census-designated place Fort Lewis had around 19,000 inhabitants at the time of the population census in 2000 . The place was named after the explorer Meriwether Lewis , who played a key role in the development of the area as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition .
Fort Lewis is the seat of the 1st US Corps (since 1981), the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Teams of the 2nd US Infantry Division , the 1st Special Forces Group (German " 1st Special Forces Brigade ") , the 2nd Battalion (German "2. Bataillon ") of the 75th Ranger Regiment , as well as various support brigades (medical, intelligence, artillery, military police, telecommunications and engineer brigades). In addition, Fort Lewis houses the headquarters of the 5th US Army (West) and the I. Corps NCO Academy (German "NCO School of the I. Corps").
The actual base extends over an area of over 350 km² and has its own connected training area, the Yakima Training Center , with an area of over 1,310 km².
Fort Lewis is one of 15 so-called "projection platforms" (main bases) of the strategic defense planning of the US Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) (German: "Command of the Army") in CONUS .
In 2010 Fort Lewis was merged with McChord Air Force Base to form Joint Base Lewis-McChord .
