The Sparkasse Arnstadt-Ilmenau was created in 1994 through the merger of the Kreissparkassen Arnstadt and Ilmenau, before the regional reform and the formation of the Ilm district were completed. However, the history of the Sparkasse goes back a long way and begins with the founding of the Stadtsparkasse Arnstadt in 1825 and the Stadtsparkasse Ilmenau in 1833, even if these credit institutions are not the legal predecessors of today's Sparkasse. This attribute applies more to the savings bank founded in 1842 for the district of Gehren and the Kreissparkasse Arnstadt, which also started business in 1842.
