history

The establishment of the bank was decided on October 10, 1907 by a resolution of the district council of the Limburg district. The main operator was District Administrator Robert Büchting . Previously, he had discussed this with several district administrators from neighboring and more distant districts, who already had experience with the establishment of savings banks there. In its submission to the district council, the district administration primarily emphasized the creation of savings opportunities for poorer sections of the population, but also the granting of loans to residents and municipalities and the generation of income for the district itself as a justification for setting up a savings bank.

The foundation became effective on February 1, 1908. At that time there were already almost 3,000 savings banks in Germany. So it was a comparatively late foundation. District Administrator Büchting became the first chairman of the board. The first seat of the Sparkasse was the district office "In der Erbach" in Limburg. In 1926, together with the district administration, they moved to the newly built district house in Limburg, which is still used as such today. In the 1930s there were plans to build their own commercial building, but they were not realized because of the Second World War. In 1958, a new building was finally built not far from the previous office, which still houses the headquarters of the Kreissparkasse Limburg today.

Historical business development

In the first 20 years after 1908, the number of savings accounts grew to around 20,000. By 1921, at the beginning of the hyperinflation, the deposits reached a level of almost 22 million marks , the deposits of almost 40 million. After the inflation, the number of accounts rose to around 7,500 by 1933, the total of deposits to around 6.1 million and the balance sheet total to around 6.5 million Reichsmarks . In the following years, among other things, legal provisions led to a sharp increase in the number of accounts. In 1939 almost 20,000 accounts, 11.5 million Reichsmark deposits and a good 12 million Reichsmark balance sheet total were recorded. Until the currency reform in 1948 , the number of accounts exceeded the 30,000 mark and the balance sheet total exceeded 52 million Reichsmarks. The total deposit of around 50 million Reichsmarks was fixed at 2.8 million D-Marks through the currency reform . By the end of 1957, the deposits had risen to almost 24 million Deutschmarks.
