The bank was founded on August 2, 1825 and the Kreissparkasse Hersfeld was founded on October 1, 1924. On October 1, 1943, by order of the Reich Ministry of Economics, the Hersfeld savings banks were merged to form the Bad Hersfeld district and city savings bank.
The Städtische Sparkasse Rotenburg was founded on April 1, 1863, and the Kreissparkasse Rotenburg ad Fulda followed on July 1, 1873. The Kreissparkasse Rotenburg ad Fulda took over the Städtische Sparkasse Rotenburg on February 1, 1931.
Both financial institutions were merged on January 1, 1974 due to the amalgamation of the old districts of Hersfeld and Rotenburg to form Sparkasse Bad Hersfeld-Rotenburg.
A small Sparkasse Museum has been located in the Sparkasse's main office since 2006.
