Fernwald is a municipality in the central Hessian district of Gießen .

Fernwald is about six kilometers east of the university town of Gießen (Lahn).
Neighboring communities
Fernwald borders the municipality of Buseck in the north, the municipality of Reiskirchen in the east, the city of Lich in the southeast, the city of Pohlheim in the southwest and the city of Gießen in the west .

Fernwald consists of the three districts Albach , Annerod and Steinbach .
history
Fernwald was created on December 31, 1971 through the merger of the formerly independent communities Steinbach, Annerod and Albach. The name is based on the piece of forest between Annerod and Steinbach, which as "Fernewald" belonged to the larger forest area of the "Wiesecker Wald" (district of Gießen).

Parish council
The community board consists of nine members. Of these, three seats and the mayor belong to the SPD, two seats each to the CDU and FW and one seat to the Greens.

Stefan Bechthold (SPD) was elected Mayor of Fernwald on June 7th, 2009 with a share of 51.9% of the votes and took office on January 1st, 2010. He prevailed in the first ballot against the CDU incumbent Matthias Klose (40.7%) and against Elke Koch-Michel (independent, 7.4%). Klose was elected in 2003 with 55.7% of the vote.
In the direct election on June 14, 2015, Stefan Bechthold (SPD) was confirmed in office with 56.8% in the first ballot. The turnout was 53.9%.

The coat of arms was approved on May 24, 1976 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior.
Blazon : "In blue a golden diagonal cross, applied a silver heart shield with a continuous black cross."
The coat of arms of the large municipality originated from the coat of arms of the district Steinbach. The German order shield and the Gleiberger inclined cross stand for their property rights in Steinbach and Annerod. The colors blue and gold were chosen for the influence of the Solms counts in Albach.
