Wettenberg is a municipality in the district of Giessen in Hesse . It consists of the three districts Krofdorf-Gleiberg , Wißmar and Launsbach .

Geographical location
Wettenberg is located on the northern outskirts of Gießen at an altitude of 158 to 362 meters in the Gleiberger Land region . In terms of nature, the community is located at the northwestern junction of the Gießener Lahntalsenke to the Krofdorfer Forest in the east of the Krofdorf-Königsberger Forest , which is part of the Gladenbacher Bergland .
Like the neighboring municipality of Biebertal, Wettenberg is a popular suburban residential area on the southern slope of the Dünsberg in the immediate vicinity of the regional center of Giessen. Due to the extensive forest area of the Krofdorf Forest and Gleiberg Castle , Wettenberg is also an important recreational area and excursion destination for the Giessen urban region.
The Lahn tributaries Fohnbach (12.0 km), Gleibach (7.7 km) and Wissmarbach (6.2 km) flow through the municipality from north to north-westerly directions, each with a 10 km² catchment area .

Wettenberg borders in the north on the municipality of Lohra ( district of Marburg-Biedenkopf ), in the northeast on the city of Lollar , in the southeast on the city of Gießen , in the south on the municipality of Heuchelheim and in the west on the municipality of Biebertal (all in the district of Gießen). Wettenberg forms the Gleiberger Land cooperation with the neighboring municipalities of Biebertal and Heuchelheim as well as Lahnau .

history
The three communities Krofdorf-Gleiberg, Wißmar and Launsbach were incorporated into the newly founded city of Lahn in 1977 and formed the district of Wettenberg (named after a wooded ridge that lies roughly in the middle between the three villages). After the dissolution of the city of Lahn, the city district became an independent municipality on August 1, 1979 under the name Wettenberg .

In the mayoral election on June 7, 2009, Thomas Brunner (SPD) prevailed against Carsten Zörb (CDU) with a turnout of 60.1% with 71% of the votes. Brunner, who previously worked in administration for 16 years as head of the office, took over from Gerhardt Schmidt on February 1, 2010. In the direct election on June 14, 2015, Thomas Brunner (SPD) was confirmed in office with 68% - against Timo Röder (CDU) with 32% - in the first ballot. The turnout was 44.9%.
Gerhardt Schmidt (SPD), who was in office from 1986 to 2010, was confirmed for a fourth term in office on September 7, 2003 in the first ballot with 89.0% of the votes. The turnout was 48.6%, there were no opposing candidates for election. In 1986, Schmidt replaced Günter Feussner, who was then the first mayor of Wettenberg, who had moved to the Gießen district as a district councilor.

Regular events and club life
Every year on the last weekend in July, the nationally known oldies festival Golden Oldies takes place, where the fifties, sixties and seventies revive musically, fashionably and culturally. There are also local and regionally known festivals in the Wettenberg districts, such as the Krämermarkt in Wißmar, the historical market in Krofdorf-Gleiberg, the fairy tale day in Wißmar, the harvest market in Launsbach and each with its own fair.
In cooperation with the neighboring municipalities from the Gleiberger Land - Heuchelheim , Biebertal and Lahnau - the "Dreimärkerfest" is celebrated annually, mostly in connection with tourist events such as "Gleiberger Land in Motion".
The annual classical winter concerts, which have made a name for themselves among connoisseurs of classical music under the name Wettenberger Winterkonzerte, are also known nationwide . Traditionally, there is no entry fee for the concerts, but donations are requested after the concert . The use of the donations is determined in advance for one concert season and announced to the public.
Wettenberg is also one of the carnival strongholds. Launsbach and Krofdorf-Gleiberg each year organize their own external meeting with the prince couple and the traditional Elferrat. In Wißmar, on the other hand, a third-party meeting takes place only every two years, which is known and popular for its unusual nature, as the meeting is designed according to the motto and the Elferrat sits on the stage according to the motto. Every year on Rose Monday there is a Rose Monday Ball, which is organized by the gymnastics and sports club Krofdorf-Gleiberg. On Shrove Tuesday, the traditional carnival parade takes place in Krofdorf-Gleiberg, in which all three districts take part.
The lively life of the more than 80 clubs registered in Wettenberg is not only expressed through their participation in the above-mentioned events. B. also in close cooperation with local authorities, schools and associations in projects such as the wood + technology museum, participation in national competitions (see below), the "education initiative" and the like. documented. The comprehensive school Gleiberger Land (until July 2007: Wettenbergschule) is the local middle school for all pupils from Wettenberg and Heuchelheim. Since August 2007 also for students from Biebertal, Heuchelheim and Hohenahr. After elementary school, the comprehensive school in Gleiberger Land extends up to the tenth grade and takes the students further, be it to the upper school level towards the Abitur and study, be it to the secondary vocational school or to an apprenticeship in a company.

The municipality of Wettenberg regularly takes part in competitions on various topics, especially in the field of environment / nature and sustainability. For example, Wettenberg was named a "Nature Conservation Commune" by the German Environmental Aid in 2007 and the year before as a "Climate Protection Commune". In 2009 Wettenberg becomes "Federal Capital for Climate Protection". In October 2010 Wettenberg was once again awarded 2nd place in the “Federal Capital in Climate Protection 2010” competition. In the competition “Our Village”, Launsbach achieved 2nd place in 2011 and 3rd place in 2014.
