Geographical location

Wettenberg is located on the northern outskirts of Gießen at an altitude of 158 to 362 meters in the Gleiberger Land region . In terms of nature, the community is located at the northwestern junction of the Gießener Lahntalsenke to the Krofdorfer Forest in the east of the Krofdorf-Königsberger Forest , which is part of the Gladenbacher Bergland .

Like the neighboring municipality of Biebertal, Wettenberg is a popular suburban residential area on the southern slope of the Dünsberg in the immediate vicinity of the regional center of Giessen. Due to the extensive forest area of ​​the Krofdorf Forest and Gleiberg Castle , Wettenberg is also an important recreational area and excursion destination for the Giessen urban region.

The Lahn tributaries Fohnbach (12.0 km), Gleibach (7.7 km) and Wissmarbach (6.2 km) flow through the municipality from north to north-westerly directions, each with a 10 km² catchment area .

The three communities Krofdorf-Gleiberg, Wißmar and Launsbach were incorporated into the newly founded city ​​of Lahn in 1977 and formed the district of Wettenberg (named after a wooded ridge that lies roughly in the middle between the three villages). After the dissolution of the city of Lahn, the city district became an independent municipality on August 1, 1979 under the name Wettenberg .

In the mayoral election on June 7, 2009, Thomas Brunner (SPD) prevailed against Carsten Zörb (CDU) with a turnout of 60.1% with 71% of the votes. Every year on the last weekend in July, the nationally known oldies festival Golden Oldies takes place, where the fifties, sixties and seventies revive musically, fashionably and culturally. There are also local and regionally known festivals in the Wettenberg districts, such as the Krämermarkt in Wißmar, the historical market in Krofdorf-Gleiberg, the fairy tale day in Wißmar, the harvest market in Launsbach and each with its own fair.

In cooperation with the neighboring municipalities from the Gleiberger Land - Heuchelheim , Biebertal and Lahnau - the "Dreimärkerfest" is celebrated annually, mostly in connection with tourist events such as "Gleiberger Land in Motion".

The annual classical winter concerts, which have made a name for themselves among connoisseurs of classical music under the name Wettenberger Winterkonzerte, are also known nationwide . Traditionally, there is no entry fee for the concerts, but donations are requested after the concert . Wettenberg is also one of the carnival strongholds. Launsbach and Krofdorf-Gleiberg each year organize their own external meeting with the prince couple and the traditional Elferrat.
