Krofdorf Forest
The Krofdorfer Forst is a contiguous forest area of around 4200 ha, which covers almost 50% of the area of Wettenberg . It is the largest closed forest area in the immediate vicinity of Giessen .
Natural space
The forest is part of the Krofdorf-Königsberger Forst natural area and lies in the transition area between the Gladenbacher Bergland and the Giessen Basin . The predominant tree species are common beech and oak. In the geological subsurface there are mainly greywacke, clay and silica slate and diabase. The soils are primarily characterized by the geological subsoil, the surface shape and, above all, by changing loess and loess clay proportions of different thicknesses. The shallow soils are mostly reserved for forest, less often for grassland use; the deeper soils are mainly used for arable farming; however, one often finds deep loess loam under the forest. Waterlogged soils have also formed on flat plateaus.
Development
The Krofdorfer Forest has important functions for ecology and climate and is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists from the surrounding area. The forest is easily accessible from the surrounding villages of Krofdorf-Gleiberg , Wißmar , Salzböden , Oberwalgern , Reimershausen , Kirchvers , Krumbach and Fellingshausen .
Only one road leads through the forest and connects Krofdorf-Gleiberg and the smelting mill on the lower reaches of the salt flats that pass through the north-east of the forest between salt soils and Reimershausen . In the middle of the forest is the forest house Waldhaus on the road.
