from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gießen Basin is a basin landscape in the area of the city of Gießen and part of the natural spatial main unit Marburg-Gießener Lahntal in the West Hessian highlands . It is divided into the Gießener Lahntalsenke with the valley of the Lahn between Lollar and Leun together with the mouth of the Dill from Ehringshausen and the Grossenlindener Hügelland to the southeast .

geography

The Giessen basin in the valley network

The Giessen pool is part of the Mediterranean Mjösen zone within which it is the Wetterau extended to the northwest before the Front Vogelsberg (east) the valley to the north en basaltic to Amöneburg Basin is locking down. As a border depression between the West Hessian mountain region and the Rhenish Slate Mountains to the west, it is extended to the north by the Elnhausen-Michelbach depression and the Wetschaft depression .

To the west, the Gießen basin is extended by the Dilltal and the Gießen-Koblenzer Lahntal , while the Marburg Lahntal Valley to the north and above is only a narrow opening through the red sandstone slabs of the Marburger Ridge and Lahnberge - both more or less south-east foothills of the Burgwald .

Adjacent low mountain range

The Gießener Lahntalsenke joins Gießen to the west and further to the north, to the Krofdorf-Königsberger Forst , the southeastern part of the Gladenbacher Bergland with the large contiguous forest area of the Krofdorfer Forst and the striking, 498 m high Dünsberg . The 300 m high basalt cones of Gleiberg and Vetzberg are in front of the Dünsberg within the Lahntalsenke .

geology

Geological map

The strong tone schluffhaltige Giessen basin is mainly through the basalt of the Vogelsberg in the East and greywacke of Giessen ceiling to the west.

Natural structure

The Giessen basin is structured as follows:

Giessener Lahntalsenke

The Gießener Lahntalsenke follows the Lahn from below the mouth of the salt flats via Lollar to Gießen, initially in a southerly direction, and then turns westwards via Wetzlar to Solms . To the northwest of Wetzlar, the Dill estuary from Ehringshausen is also part of the natural area.

Places and tributaries

One after the other, the Lahn passes through the municipalities of Lollar , Wettenberg , Gießen , Heuchelheim , Wetzlar , Lahnau , and again Wetzlar and Solms .

The most important tributaries and lakes (in italics) of the Gießener Lahntalsenke are

Note: "right" means "west" until Giessen, so on a map it is left!

Großenlinden hill country

The Großenlindener Hügelland connects to the south-southeast of the Lahn valley between Gießen and Wetzlar and continues in this direction, flowing over into the Wetterau , the border mainly following the watershed between Lahn and Main . At the western interface to the Wetzlarer Hintertaunus it reaches heights of up to 300 m, at the eastern point to the Gießener Land ridge , which is already part of the Vorderen Vogelsberg , and significantly less in the center.

Central locations are Linden and Langgöns .
