The Bieber is a 13.4 km long river over its nominal source stream Strupbach , and even 14.8 km long over its left and more productive source stream Dünsbergbach in the northwest of the district of Giessen , Central Hesse . It is the central flowing water of the Krofdorf-Königsberger Forest in the southern Gladenbacher Bergland and flows through the aforementioned ridge from the north-west in south-south-east directions, to flow into the Lahn from the right at Heuchelheim .

Apart from its estuary in Heuchelheim, the Bieber runs entirely in the municipality of Biebertal , for which it was named.

geography

course

Source streams and upper reaches

The or, more often, the Strupbach rises at about 340 m above sea level about 1 km north of Königsberg and about 1 km east of Hohensolms ( Hohenahr community , Lahn-Dill district ) near the district boundary. The brook runs through the Königsberg district to the south-east and passes the high-lying core town half a kilometer to the north-east. The stream touches the sub-district Lindenhöfe to the east, the Schieferkaut mine and the Strupbach homestead to the north, and finally flows 3.2 km north of the Obermühle and Landesstraße 3474 with the Dünsbergbach.

The Dünsbergbach is the longer source stream (4.6 km) and also has the larger catchment area (7.656 km² vs. 4.352 km²). It rises a good 1 km west-southwest of the Frankenbach district at an altitude of around 320 m and leaves its headwaters after two tributaries - the Lengelbach creek on the right and the Käsbach creek on the left - towards the south between the up to 414 m high Helfholz (west) and the eponymous 498 m high Dünsberg (east) through the Dünsbergbachtal named after him.

After the confluence of both source streams above the Obermühle, the Bieber passes next to the L 3474 the southern foot of the Dünsberg and leaves the forest as well as the Gladenbacher Bergland in the direction of the Gießener Lahntalsenke .

Lower course

Flowing to the southeast, the Bieber reaches the sub-district Bieber von Rodheim-Bieber , from now on accompanied by the state road 3286. Coming from Fellingshausen , the 4.6 km long Kehlbach flows into it from the left , the only notable tributary besides the two source streams. Its source is at the eastern foot of the Dünsberg, which is thus circled almost all around by tributaries of the beaver.

Then the sub-district of Rodheim is passed to the west, as well as the higher-lying Vetzberg with Vetzberg Castle about 1 km south-west. The valley of the Kropbach , which does not flow into the Bieber, but directly into the Lahn, runs between this and the Gleiberg Castle in Krofdorf-Gleiberg, which is located further southeast . The Bieber flows directly at Hofgut Hof Schmitte , first mentioned as a forest smithy to Gleiberg Castle, past the Amtsmannmühle and picks up the Himmelbach from the right before it reaches the Heuchelheim district and here crosses an earlier railway line (see illustration).

The Bieber flows through the old town center of Heuchelheim next to the Bachstraße, continues to the south next to the Lahnparkstraße and finally flows into the Lahn from the right near the bridge , at about Lahn kilometer 105. The confluence of the Kropbach or Fohnbach (12.0 km length, catchment area 13.5 km²) is less than a kilometer upstream.

Catchment area

The 34.60 km² catchment area of the Bieber is located in the Gladenbacher Bergland and the Marburg-Gießener Lahntal and is drained via the Lahn and the Rhine to the North Sea.

It borders

  • in the northeast to that of the Salzböde , a tributary of the Lahn
  • in the east to that of the Lahn tributary Fohnbach
  • in the west to that of the Schwalbenbach , also a tributary of the Lahn
  • in the northwest to that of the Stadterbach , a tributary of the Aar
  • and in the north to the Aar itself, which drains over the Dill to the Lahn.

The highest elevation is 497.7  m above sea level. NHN high Dünsberg in the northeast.

The catchment area is predominantly forested in the northern area, otherwise it is characterized by arable land and meadows, as well as by smaller localities and the town of Heuchelheim.
