geography

Geographical location

Lahnau is located directly on the Lahn, on the northern or right side and has the populated areas on the so-called Lahn main terrace. Lahnau is part of the Gleiberger Land cooperation , which, in addition to Lahnau, includes the communities Wettenberg , Biebertal and Heuchelheim .

Neighboring communities

Lahnau borders in the north on the municipality of Biebertal , in the east on the municipality Heuchelheim (both in the district of Gießen ) and in the south and west on the city of Wetzlar (Lahn-Dill district).

history

At the "Eberacker" near Dorlar, archaeological excavations by the Roman-Germanic Commission in 1991 and 1992 enabled the Lahnau-Dorlar Roman camp, a Roman field camp with strong legions at the time of the Drusus campaigns around 10 BC. Chr., To be proven. Archaeological excavations carried out on the western outskirts of today's Waldgirmes since 1995 have provided evidence of a civil Roman city in Germania magna . The use of the facility could be dated from coin finds with coins of the Varus : It was probably made a few years before the birth of Christ and was abandoned after the defeat of the Romans in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in the second half of 9 AD. Ceramic finds here prove the peaceful coexistence of Romans and Teutons. (→ Main article: Roman Forum Lahnau-Waldgirmes )

Incorporations

The Dorlar community voluntarily incorporated itself into Wetzlar in 1972 . Wetzlar, Gießen, Atzbach, Waldgirmes and 12 other communities formed the city of Lahn from 1977 to 1979 . Within Lahn, the districts of Waldgirmes, Dorlar and Atzbach made up the Lahntal district . After the dissolution of the city of Lahn, the city district became an independent municipality on August 1, 1979 under the name Lahnau .

The district of Dorlar thus belonged to four different communities within seven years, which should be considered a curiosity even in the complicated history of the Hessian territorial reform .

Religions

Atzbach, Dorlar and Waldgirmes had been Protestant since the 16th century. However, many Roman Catholic expellees from Silesia and ethnic Germans from Hungary also came to Lahnau after the Second World War . Even so, the majority today is Protestant. A historical peculiarity is that the borders of the Protestant regional churches Rhineland and Hesse run exactly through the town. The parish of Atzbach-Dorlar belongs to the Rhineland, the one from Waldgirmes to Hesse.
