About this picture

Geratal is a rural municipality in the Ilm district in the German state of Thuringia . It is located on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest about 30 kilometers southwest of Erfurt and was newly formed in 2019 . It is named after the rivers Wilde Gera and Zahme Gera , which flow through some of the districts. The seat of the municipal administration is the largest district of Gräfenroda . The Geratal / Plaue administrative community is located in the Geraberg district , to which the Geratal community itself does not belong.

geography

The districts of the municipality are located on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest between Arnstadt and Oberhof in a hilly, partly wooded and partly open field. The main town of Graefenroda and the small village of Liebenstein with its castle to the northeast are located on the Wilder Gera in the middle . To the northwest is the Ohrdrufer Platte , a dry, karst plateau on which the districts of Frankenhain (on the Gissel) and Gossel (above the Jonastal ) lie. To the south-east lies the valley of the Zahmen Gera , in which the second largest district Geraberg is located. Geschwenda lies in its side valley on the Wirrbach between Graefenroda and Geraberg.

The highest mountain in the community is the 815 m high Eckardtskopf in the far southwest on the border with Oberhof. The lowest points are in the Wilder Gera valley between Liebenstein and Plaue at a height of around 350 m and in the Jonastal below the Biensteinkopf at around 370 m.

history

During the first merger negotiations, the communities Geschwenda, Gossel, Gräfenroda and Liebenstein, which were united with two other communities in the administrative community of Upper Geratal , agreed on a merger to form a rural community on January 1, 2019. In the summer of 2018, the communities Frankenhain and Geraberg interested in the formation of the rural community, so that the merger of all six communities was regulated by a contract and was decided by the state parliament on December 13, 2018. The administrative community of Upper Geratal was dissolved at the same time.

politics

The first elections for the municipal council and mayor took place in the newly founded municipality for the municipal elections in Thuringia on May 26, 2019. Until the meeting of the new parish council, the parish council consisted of 63 members from all former parish councils of the 6 founding parishes.

The council of the municipality of Geratal consists of 20 councilors (as of May 26, 2019):

  • CDU : 8 seats
  • Free community of voters Geratal: 4 seats
  • Citizens for Geratal / DIE LINKE: 3 seats
  • Free community of voters Ilm-Kreis / Geraberg: 3 seats
  • SPD : 2 seats

After the re-establishment of Geratal, David Atzrott initially headed the community as “Commissioner of the Geratal Community”. He resigned from this office on March 8, 2019. The new commissioner was until the new mayor, Dr. Ralf Elliger appointed.

In the election for full-time mayor on May 26, 2019, Dominik Straube (CDU) prevailed in the first ballot with 55.0% of the valid votes cast against 3 competitors.

Economy and Infrastructure

The most important branches of industry in the region since the 19th century have been the glass, porcelain and wood industries. After 1990 a profound structural change took place, so that most of the old large companies closed. On the other hand, a larger industrial area was created on the A 71, in which the thermometer manufacturer Geratherm , among others , has settled.

The traffic connection is via the federal highway 71 from Erfurt to Schweinfurt with the junction Gräfenroda and the federal road 88 , which leads from the A 71 via Gräfenroda to Ohrdruf . There are further road connections to Plaue , Ilmenau and Gehlberg and in the Jonastal to Arnstadt and Crawinkel .

There are train stations in Graefenroda on the Erfurt – Würzburg railway line and in Geraberg on the Erfurt – Ilmenau railway line . Another stop in demand is in Dörrberg.
