Wirrbachtal bridge on the B88 |
The Wirrbach is an approximately six kilometer long tributary of the Zahmer Gera in the Thuringian Forest .
It rises on the northern slope of the 651 meter high Arlesberg not far from the Geraberg district of the same name on the Kalteborn. The Wirrbach flows through its initially poorly developed valley in a north-easterly direction. The parish pond, the goose pond and the Geschwenda forest pool are located here, all of which are fed by the Wirrbach. The Waldbad Geschwenda, which was the first open-air swimming pool in the GDR to have a plastic pool, is still very popular today because of its quiet location in the forest.
Now the forest clears and the flat back of the desk-like Geschwendaer Berg can be seen in the east. This plateau is used for agriculture, the soil is sandy here. The Wirrbach now flows through the place Geschwenda from west to east. Behind the village the valley narrows and deepens. Since August 2002 it has been spanned by the Wirrbachtal bridge of the B-88 bypass. The valley of the Wirrbach is called Hanftal from Geschwenda . This name comes from the earlier cultivation of hemp . The valley cut is about 70 meters deep here. In addition to a flood retention basin and five fish breeding ponds, the Geschwendas sewage treatment plant, built in 2004, is also located here before the stream reaches Angelroda , where it joins the Zahme Gera from the left in front of the 26 meter high railway viaduct .
