history
It was first mentioned in 775 under the name Elgeslebo . At that time there was a small hilltop castle in the center of the village . It served to protect the residents and to guard traffic. In 1533, the Reformation was introduced in Elxleben, which was then part of the Schwarzburg County ( Schwarzburg-Rudolstädter Oberherrschaft ) . At that time, two trade routes ran through the village; one from Erfurt in the north to Stadtilm in the south and one from Arnstadt in the west to Weimar in the east. After 1600 the cultivation of woad in Elxleben declined significantly, as this dye was no longer needed due to the development of America and the associated spread of new commercial goods such as indigo . In Elxleben, as in the entire region, the Thirty Years' War led to heavy losses, which were mainly caused by plundering Croatian soldiers.
The construction of today's baroque church began in 1722 and continued until 1725. The 44 meter high church tower was the last to be built.
In 1777 there was a great flood of the Wipfra in Elxleben , which caused great damage in the village.
The road from Erfurt to Stadtilm through the village was expanded into a paved post road in 1863 , and there was also a post office in Elxleben since 1868.
In 1923 the tenant Waldemar Schlueter managed the 125 hectare manor .
