About this picture

history

A burial mound in the Elxleben district indicates an early settlement of the area. It was covered with a well-preserved skeleton. It was probably a neolithic , corded ceramic core burial with a spiral ring. Subsequent burials speak in favor of reviving burial traditions. This place also indicates cult motifs.

A legend from the time of Charlemagne mentions a place Ebbesschleben in connection with the division of Thuringia after the subjugation of the Wends , which is interpreted as today's Elxleben. In any case, the name is of Germanic origin, as is the place. A verifiable documentary mention falls on October 22nd, 973 as part of an exchange of goods between the Archdiocese of Magdeburg and the Fulda Monastery .

From 1370 Elxleben belonged to the area of the city of Erfurt . At the end of the 15th century, the place belonged to the Vogtei Walschleben and since the administrative reform of 1706 to the office of Gispersleben. In 1802 the place came with the Erfurt area to Prussia and between 1807 and 1813 to the French Principality of Erfurt . With the Congress of Vienna Elxleben came back to Prussia in 1815 and in 1816 was incorporated into the Erfurt district in the Prussian province of Saxony .

During the reign of National Socialism , the worker Oskar Elle and the bricklayer Hugo Henning, both members of the Communist Party of Germany , were able to distribute leaflets until May 1934 . They were arrested and sentenced on November 9, 1934 by the Higher Regional Court of Kassel to prison terms of 21 and 18 months respectively. At the end of March 1940 the first Polish forced laborers came to Elxleben. In 1944, an unknown number of Eastern workers were housed on the railway station premises in Kühnhausen . The barracks were demolished a few years ago due to new buildings. Karl John (born 1900), Hugo Köhler (born 1894), Emil Striegnitz (born in 1900), Emil Striegnitz (born in 1900), were arrested by the Nazi state against former MPs, functionaries and members of the Social Democratic Party of Germany , the Communist Party of Germany and the Center as part of the action grid , a wave of arrests 1869) and August Carl (1896) arrested. On August 22, they were transferred to Buchenwald concentration camp and released again by mid-September.

Elxleben was occupied by the US Army around April 10, 1945 , relieved by the Red Army at the beginning of July . So the place became part of the Soviet occupation zone (SBZ) and from 1949 the GDR , he took part - including expropriations and collectivization - all associated social developments.

Blazon : “Split in a wave cut of silver and red; in front an upright black, five-ended deer pole with grind, behind a silver flaming sword pointed upwards with the tip. "

The stag bar refers to an interpretation of the place name, the previous spelling of which was elk body and could indicate elk or deer forest. The earlier municipal seal also showed a corresponding picture. The silver flaming sword is the attribute of St. Michael and thus stands for the church patron or the St. Michaeliskirche. Finally, the wave division symbolizes the river Gera .

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Frank Jung .

St. Michaelis village church

St. Michaelis village church ( location → )

The late Gothic church was built on the site of the earlier St. John's Church. The current nave dates from 1576. In 1864 the church was last rebuilt. The high altar with the depiction of the Last Supper was created by Hans Friedemann the Elder. J. 1629. The four apostles stand above the pedestal , flanked by Moses and John the Baptist . The chandeliers and baptismal fonts, as well as the organ prospectus and the church box, date from the 19th century . The tower was built on August 2, 1587 ( topping-out ceremony ) on the west side of the nave and is 15½ Prussian rods (58.37 m) high from the “button to the ground” (1 Prussian rod = 3.766 m). The tower clock from the 16th century was replaced by a radio-controlled system in 1990. In the tower hang bells from different years of origin: the 150 kg heavy c 2 bell is from 1908, the a 1 bell is from 1675 and weighs 400 kg, while the f sharp 0 bell with 1250 kg dates from 1561. Since September 2011 the church has had a fourth bell weighing 215 kg, which is dedicated to the long-time pastor Herbert Voss. She is supposed to announce the birth of a child in the village. On the west side of the tower hangs the striking bell from the second half of the 18th century, which calls at this point over the old village with the three "Anger" streets.

A tape with the initials "VDMIAE" from the well-known Latin phrase Verbum dei manet in aeternum decorates the lintel of the second window. This saying (“Word of God remains in eternity”) is often found in Protestant churches, as a bell inscription or as a motto of parishes.

Plaster stoves

Sparkling lime ovens

The four former Sparkalk kilns or gypsum firing kilns (founded in 1854) in Elxleben are a technical monument. They supplied material for stucco facades and stucco ceilings, for the region and far beyond.

Economy and Infrastructure

Elxleben is an agricultural place. There are also larger industrial parks to the west of the village where various companies are located. The good transport connections and the proximity to the state capital Erfurt have a positive effect here.

Elxleben is on federal highway 4 , which runs west of the town and is developed as a four-lane expressway. It connects Elxleben with Erfurt and the federal highway 71 in the south and Nordhausen in the north. Other roads lead to Witterda , Kühnhausen and Walschleben . In Elxleben there is a train station on the Kühnhausen – Bad Langensalza railway line with train connections to Erfurt in the south and Mühlhausen and Kassel in the northwest. There are also two bus routes to and from Erfurt and Sömmerda.
