The Principality of Erfurt existed from 1806 to 1814 and comprised Erfurt and the surrounding country including the County of Blankenhain . It was directly subordinate to the French emperor .

The Principality of Erfurt, d. H. the former Electoral Mainz Erfurt State , was together with the rule Blankenhain after the defeat of Prussia in the twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt as an imperial state domain ( domaine réservé à l'Empereur ) under the name of province of Erfurt directly Napoléon Bonaparte , assumed while the surrounding Thuringian states the Join the Rheinbund .

From October 25, 1813, after the Battle of Leipzig , Erfurt was besieged by Prussian, Austrian and Russian units ( siege of Erfurt ). After the conclusion of an armistice, the Prussians entered the city on January 6, 1814 as agreed. In May they took over the Petersberg and Cyriaksburg citadels without a fight . At the Congress of Vienna in 1815 it was awarded to Prussia, which, however, ceded the eastern and southern parts of the Erfurt land area and the Blankenhain area to Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach . Erfurt itself became the capital of the newly created administrative district of Erfurt in the province of Saxony .
