The small town of Großbreitenbach is a rural community and a state-approved resort in the Ilm district in Thuringia .

geography

Großbreitenbach is located in the Thuringian Slate Mountains about 50 kilometers south of Erfurt and about 15 kilometers southeast of Ilmenau between the Long Mountain in the north, the Schwarza valley in the southeast and the Rennsteig in the southwest. The core town itself is around 600 meters above sea level on a plateau above the Schwarza Valley, as are the northeastern districts of Böhlen, Gillersdorf, Friedersdorf, Wildenspring, Willmersdorf, Herschdorf and Allersdorf. To the west of Großbreitenbach are the districts of Altenfeld (in the Oelze valley ) and Neustadt with the hamlet of Kahlert directly on the ridge of the Rennsteig mountains.

The largest river in the district is the Schwarza, which forms the southeastern municipal boundary. In addition to the Oelze, the Grundsbach, Breitenbach, Kurau, Junkersbach and Finkenbach also flow into it. The Rinne , also a tributary of the Schwarza, rises near Herschdorf in the far northeast , while the Wohlrose , which rises north of Neustadt, flows to the Ilm .

The highest mountain in the urban area is the Große Dreiherrnstein with 838 m height, the Lange Berg comes to a height of 809 m. The highest district is Neustadt am Rennsteig (785 m). The lowest point is in the Schwarzatal am Zirkel at a height of about 380 m.

After the legislative resolution in the state parliament on December 13, 2018, the merger to form the rural community took place on January 1, 2019, and the Großbreitenbach administrative community was dissolved at the same time. The previous districts of Herschdorf, Allersdorf and Willmersdorf, have since then been districts of the rural community of Großbreitenbach on the same level as Herschdorf.
