Schwarzatal is a town and a rural community that was formed on January 1, 2019 and belongs to the Schwarzatal administrative community in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in the German state of Thuringia . On December 31, 2017, 3672 inhabitants lived in the urban area.

Schwarzatal was named after the valley of the Schwarza .

The city consists of the districts of Blumenau , Glasbach , Lichtenhain / Bergbahn , Mellenbach , Meuselbach , Oberweißbach / Thuringian Forest , Obstfelderschmiede , Schwarzmühle and Zirkel .

history

As part of the voluntary mergers of the regional reforms in 2018 and 2019, the city of Oberweißbach / Thuringian Forest and the communities Meuselbach-Schwarzmühle and Mellenbach-Glasbach agreed on a merger on January 1, 2019. Mellenbach-Glasbach belonged to the administrative community of Mittleres Schwarzatal , Oberweißbach / Thür. Wald and Meuselbach-Schwarzmühle are part of the Bergbahnregion / Schwarzatal administrative association . Both administrative communities were also dissolved on January 1, 2019.

The first mayor of the city of Schwarzatal is Kathrin Kräupner (independent, supported by Free Voters, SPD, Schwarzatal Fire Brigade Association and DIE LINKE). On May 26, 2019, she won the first ballot with 71.0% of the valid votes cast against a competitor.

Mellenbach-Glasbach station on the Schwarzatalbahn

The urban area is accessed by several railway lines. The stations Obstfelderschmiede, Mellenbach-Glasbach and Meuselbach-Schwarzmühle are on the Schwarzatalbahn . Obstfelderschmiede and Lichtenhain are connected by the 1.4 km long funicular of the Oberweißbacher Bergbahn , which is followed by the flat line via Oberweißbach-Deesbach to Cursdorf.
