Hohenwarte was first mentioned in a document in 1361. The place belonged to the Grafschaft Schwarzburg-Leutenberg and after its extinction from 1564 to 1918 to the supremacy of the Grafschaft or the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

For centuries, the operation of mills shaped the small town on the Saale . The Rudolstadt company Grosch & Zitkow set up a cardboard box factory in Hohenwarte in 1904. Due to the influx of a large number of workers, the population rose rapidly. The construction of the Hohenwarte dam finally changed the appearance of the place fundamentally. The hall church was rebuilt in 1934–38 as a replacement for this submerged church in Preßwitz . New building blocks were built for the workers of the Hohenwarte pumped storage power plant; in the 1960s the town had over 300 inhabitants. Since the political change, he has been particularly hard hit by demographic change; the number of inhabitants had meanwhile more than halved. Currently increased from 140 to 180.

From 1993 to 1995 the community belonged to the Saale-Loquitz administrative community . With the dissolution of this on October 19, 1995, Kaulsdorf became a fulfilling municipality for Hohenwarte.
