history

The origin of the settlement of Döschnitz is unknown, but there are indications that the place arose at the time of the early Slavic clearing settlement in the Thuringian Forest from the 9th century. The place was first mentioned as Tschitz in 1422. Due to the lack of fertile agricultural land, the place was initially characterized by forestry and slate , iron ore and limestone mining. A hammer smithy existed until 1862 as early as the 15th century. After the Thirty Years' War , which also affected Döschnitz, the oil trade gained in importance, iron ore mining was intensified and in 1849 a grinding mill was set up for the locally mined limestone (called Döschnitzer marble ). The mining of ores and rocks suffered a decline in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Until 1918 the place belonged to the sovereignty of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

During the GDR era, agriculture and especially livestock farming were increasingly practiced in Döschnitz, and tourism and recreation also gained in importance at that time.
