The community belongs to the administrative community Schwarzatal , which has its administrative seat in the city of Schwarzatal .

Place name

The name "Meura" is derived from "mûra" or "muere" (the Old High German names for "wall"). It is believed that there is a close connection to the nearby Meura stones. The rocks rise up like a wall on the mountain slope and form a natural boundary to the Schlagetal.

Another name interpretation can be traced back to the location of the municipality: In the past centuries, Meura was referred to as a border town. The boundary in the south and east of the municipality formed a territorial and political wall to other sovereigns.

history

Meura was first mentioned as Meire in 1370 . In particular, extensive forests were part of the marking of the place, so that in the 17th and 18th centuries the timber trade was the dominant branch of business, as was the olive grocery trade . Mining was also carried out on a small scale. Applying scientific knowledge, in particular the knowledge of the healing powers of natural and plant-based raw materials, 45 oil retailers, 13 operators of "Brandewein-bubbles", 6 laboratory assistants and a pharmacist were active in the village in 1762. In 1812 there were 606 inhabitants. In the middle of the 19th century there was an increased emigration to America. From 1930 the place became a tourist destination, from the 1960s until 2015 Meura was a state-approved resort .

The place belonged to the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt ( suzerainty ), from 1920 to the district of Rudolstadt , from 1952 to the district of Neuhaus and since the district reform in 1994 to the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt .

Economy and Infrastructure

Meura Haflinger Stud

Pasture lift in the Haflinger stud

The largest Haflinger stud in Europe has been located in Meura for many years . Over 350 horses are bred on a total area of 3.5 hectares, for which extensive pastures are used in summer on fallow field terraces on the plateaus of the Thuringian slate mountains within a radius of about 15 km from the stud.

The Haflinger Gestüt Meura was founded in 1969 as a state-recognized Haflinger breeding company of the German Democratic Republic . In 1976 it became a state- owned property . Until 1990 it was managed by Dr. Siegfried Sendig (born January 27, 1935 - August 21, 2011). Since 1993 the stud farm has been a family business of the Sendig family, recognized by the German Equestrian Association (FN), a recognized training company and certified family-friendly riding stable and since 1992 a mare performance test station on behalf of the Thuringian state government. In addition, the stud is a recognized company for the production of horse milk and cosmetic products based on horse milk.

The stud became known for refining heavy Haflinger horses, imported for the rebuilding of agriculture after the Second World War, into versatile, sporty small horses. Due to the increasing motorization of agriculture on the one hand small farm horses had become superfluous as work animals, while on the other hand equestrian sport became more popular. As part of a stud book conversion from 2006 to 2007, the stud joined the stud book and the stud book of the new Edelbluthaflinger breed and the Edelbluthaflinger interest group. Today, modern small horses are bred in Meura, which can be used in dressage , show jumping , driving or recreational riding and which, depending on their blood content, belong to the Haflinger breed or the noble Haflinger breed.
