The Rudolstadt district with its seat in Rudolstadt was formed from the remaining district area . The district was assigned to the newly formed Gera district .
On May 17, 1990 the district was renamed the Rudolstadt district. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district of Rudolstadt was awarded to the re-established state of Thuringia in October 1990 . During the district reform in Thuringia , it went up on July 1, 1994 in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district .
