history
On July 25, 1952, there was an extensive administrative reform in the GDR , during which, among other things, the states of the GDR lost their importance and new districts were established. The Schleiz district at that time gave municipalities to the new Lobenstein and Zeulenroda districts . The Schleiz district with its seat in Schleiz was formed from the remaining district area together with the communities Dröswein, Langenbach, Langenbuch, Misslareuth, Mühltroff and Thierbach from the district of Plauen (Saxony) . The district was assigned to the newly formed Gera district .
On May 17, 1990, the district became Schleiz. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the Schleiz district was allocated to the re-established state of Thuringia in October 1990 . On April 1, 1992, the city of Mühltroff and the communities of Thierbach and Langenbach were reclassified to Saxony. During the district reform in Thuringia , the district became part of the new Saale-Orla district on July 1, 1994 .
