The Eisenach district in the Erfurt district

The Eisenach district was a district in the Erfurt district of the GDR . From 1990 to 1994 it existed as the Eisenach district in the state of Thuringia . His area is now in the Wartburg district and in the independent city of Eisenach in Thuringia. The seat of the district administration was in Eisenach. The GDR zip code for the district was 59.

geography

The Eisenach district was located in the west of Thuringia and in the southwest of the Erfurt district on the state border with Hesse . The Eisenach district was a relatively wooded, industrial and agricultural district. It encompassed the five cities of Eisenach , Ruhla , Creuzburg , Treffurt and Berka / Werra and extended from Treffurt on the northern border to the Frauenseer Forst and Thuringian Forest in the south. It was shaped by the landscape in the western district of the Werra valley , which partially formed the border with Hesse and the Federal Republic of Germany. The north-western foothills of the Thuringian Forest with the beginning of the Rennsteig were in the south and south-east of the district . The north-east of the district bordered naturally on the Hainich . The most important flowing waters besides the Werra were the Hörsel and the Nesse , the largest standing water was the Wilhelmsthaler See .

The Eisenach district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the (rural) districts of Mühlhausen , Langensalza , Gotha , Schmalkalden , Bad Salzungen and until 1972 Hersfeld , Rotenburg (Fulda) and until 1973 Eschwege, from 1972 Hersfeld-Rotenburg and from 1974 Werra -Meißner circle .

history

The circle was formed in the course of the administrative reform in the GDR on July 25, 1952. It included the northern part of the previously existing Eisenach district , the city of Treffurt and its current districts of Falken , Großburschla and Schnellmannshausen, and the community of Hallungen - previously in the Mühlhausen district .

In the GDR, the district was a focus of the vehicle and watch industry. In addition to the city of Eisenach, the municipalities of Ruhla and Seebach in particular were massively expanded into industrial locations. Major industrial enterprises of the circle were in addition to the automobile plant in Eisenach , the clock works Ruhla , vehicle Ruhla (FER) and the Petkus agricultural machinery factory Wutha . The western part of the district was characterized by its location on the inner-German border . The Wartha border crossing point was near Eisenach ; the station Gerstungen was an important border station of the GDR.

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Eisenach district. Until October 2, 1990, the district belonged to the district of Erfurt , then to the newly formed state of Thuringia . On July 1, 1994, the districts of Eisenach and Bad Salzungen were combined with the communities of Behringen , Craula , Tüngeda , Reichenbach and Wolfsbehringen of the former Langensalza district to form the new Wartburg district .

politics

The former Hotel Rautenkranz on Eisenach's market square served as the seat of the district administration

After the first free local elections on May 6, 1990 , the district council, which existed until 1994, was composed as follows:
CDU - 36 seats
SPD - 28 seats
PDS - 9 seats
Greens - 6 seats
Peasant Party - 4 seats
farmers' association - 2 seats
Bund Free Democrats - 4 Seats
Democratic Awakening - 3 seats
DSU - 3 seats
Democratic Women's Federation of Germany - 1 seat
New Forum - 1 seat
United Left - 1 seat

As the strongest parliamentary group, the CDU had the right to propose the post of district administrator. She proposed the doctor Martin Kaspari , who was elected to the district administrator of the Eisenach district with an absolute majority of 83 votes and held this office until the district was dissolved in 1994.

Tourism, culture and sights

Until 1990, the district's tourist infrastructure was concentrated almost exclusively on the town of Eisenach with the Wartburg and its numerous cultural monuments (see: Eisenach # Culture and Sights ). The castles Normannstein , Burg Creuzburg and Brandenburg were located in the restricted area of the inner German border and were not accessible or only to a very limited extent. The areas in the north-east of the district that are now part of the Hainich National Park were a restricted military area as part of the Kindel military training area, while the places around Ruhla that are now open to tourists in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park were purely industrial in character. The Wilhelmsthal Castle , located south of Eisenach, served as a children's home and was not accessible as a sight. The Altenberger See was of local importance as a local recreation destination and campsite . The Hohe Sonne was an important starting point for hikes on the Rennsteig, as it actually began in Hörschel in the restricted border area.

License Plate

Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinctive signs starting with the letter pairs LD , LE and LF from around 1974 to the end of 1990 . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was LR 70-01 to LR 90-00 .

The vehicle distinguishing mark for the district from 1991 onwards was ESA . It was issued until January 31, 1995. As the only old license plate in Thuringia, ESA was not reintroduced in the course of license plate liberalization . As of December 31, 2018, 458 vehicles with ESA license plates were still registered in Eisenach and 1139 in the Wartburg district.
