The Greiz district in the Gera district |
The Greiz district was a district in the Gera district in the GDR , which existed from 1952 to 1990. From 1990 it existed as the district of Greiz in the newly formed state of Thuringia in the Federal Republic of Germany . His area is today in the district of Greiz in Thuringia and in the Vogtlandkreis in Saxony. The seat of the district administration was in Greiz .
geography
The Greiz district was the smallest in terms of area and the most densely populated district in the Gera district.
Neighboring areas
The Greiz district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the Gera-Land , Werdau , Reichenbach , Plauen-Land and Zeulenroda districts .
Natural space
The south of the district, including the cities of Greiz and Elsterberg, was part of the 400 to 500 m high Central Vogtland hill country , which was traversed by the 40 to 60 m deep valley of the White Elster . The fertile loess soil made it possible to grow wheat in this area. The southwest and the entire northern half of the district were part of the East Thuringian-Vogtland plateau , a slate mountain range in which a flat, undulating land surface had developed due to the similarity of the rock.
History from 1952
The area around the city of Greiz was characterized by agricultural production, which before the Second World War was characterized by many smaller farms. With the invasion of the Red Army and the introduction of socialist structures, this situation changed in 1952. Now the goods and livestock were redistributed and the farms were merged into large agricultural production cooperatives (LPG).
The first of these newly founded cooperatives were the "LPG Edwin Hoernle" in Markersdorf, the "LPG Philipp Müller" in Lunzig Kauern, the "LPG Thomas Müntzer" in Greiz-Schönfeld and the "LPG Neues Leben" in Wolfersdorf.
Territorial structure
Circle formation
|
The law on the further democratization of the structure and functioning of the state organs in the states in the German Democratic Republic of July 23, 1952 resulted in an extensive district reform in the five remaining states of the GDR .
On July 25, 1952, the federal states were dissolved and 14 districts were established. In doing so, traditional circles were dissolved or split up into smaller circles, with changes of area also taking place beyond the borders of the former five countries. The district of Greiz , which has existed since 1922, gave 38 communities to the newly founded district of Zeulenroda, with Fraureuth and Gottesgrün two communities moved to the district of Karl-Marx-Stadt ( Werdau district ). The district was assigned to the newly formed district of Gera, district town and seat of administration (council of the district until 1990; then district office) was Greiz.
The following 36 communities remained in the district and together with the city of Elsterberg and the communities of Cunsdorf, Görschnitz, Noßwitz, Pansdorf and Tremnitz (from the Plauen district) formed the new Greiz district :
Altgernsdorf, Albersdorf, Berga ad Elster, Clodra, Cossengrün, Culmitzsch, Daßlitz, Eula, Friedmannsdorf, Greiz, Großkundorf, Großdraxdorf, Hohndorf, Katzendorf, Kahmer, Kleinkundorf, Kleinreinsdorf, Kühdorf, Markersdorf, Mohlsdorf, Neugernsdorf, Ngeißdorf, Reinsdorf, Obergeißdorf, Reudnitz, Sorge-Settendorf, Teichwolframsdorf, Tschirma, Untergeißendorf, Waltersdorf bei Berga / Elster, Wernsdorf, Wildenaube, Wittchendorf, Wolfersdorf, Zickra bei Berga and Zoghaus.
Municipal area changes and reclassifications until 1994
Chronology of incorporation and reclassification |
---|
|
On May 17, 1990 the district was renamed the district of Greiz. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district of Greiz was assigned to the re-established state of Thuringia by the Land Introduction Act in October 1990 . During the district reform in Thuringia , it went up on July 1, 1994 together with the Gera-Land district in the Greiz district . Between 1990 and 1994 the number of municipalities in the (rural) district was reduced to half (32/16) through incorporations and reclassifications.

Economy and Transport
Following on from the traditional trade (cloth makers' guilds had existed since 1627), the textile industry determined the economic structure of the district. The district town of Greiz has been the center of the East Thuringian textile industry with wool and silk weaving mills and textile finishing companies (VEB Greika) since 1900. In Berga, the two textile companies VEB alwo and VEB Greika determined the economic profile of the city. Elsterberg was the location of the VEB Kunstseidenwerk "Clara Zetkin" and several other smaller companies for the production of cotton fabrics, bed linen and linings. Of the companies in other branches of industry in the district, only the VEB Chemiewerk Greiz-Dölau, which produced the materials required in the plastics industry, was of greater importance. Kitchen stoves were produced in Elsterberg (VEB Warming Equipment), and VEB Landtechnischer Anlagenbau was located in Berga.
The Gera – Plauen railway line ran parallel to the White Elster. It touched all three cities in the district. There were no transit roads. In the vicinity of Greiz the west-east running F 94 (Reichenbach-Zeulenroda) and the north-south running F 92 (Gera-Plauen) crossed.
License Plate
Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinctive signs starting with the pair of letters NF from around 1974 to the end of 1990 . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was NZ 30-01 to NZ 40-00 .
At the beginning of 1991 the district received the distinctive sign GRZ .
