The July 22, 1990 from the People's Chamber adopted ländereinführungsgesetz presented the 1952 abolished countries in the German Democratic Republic restores. The newly founded German states were essentially formed by amalgamating districts , which meant that the new borders differed from those of 1947, which even minor reclassifications have changed little since 1990.

In addition, the constitutional law contains the necessary provisions on the relationship between ( federal ) republic and states; with German reunification , however, these were lifted. Originally, the law was not supposed to come into force until October 14th, but the Unification Treaty brought this date forward to October 3rd, 1990 and thus the date of reunification.
