Transport Act 1980

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Transport Act 1980 was from the Parliament of the United Kingdom legislation passed. He introduced the deregulation of national bus services in the UK and allowed regulators to deregulate bus services on a trial basis. It was passed by Margaret Thatcher on the initiative of the Conservative government . The later Transport Act 1985 extended the deregulation to urban bus transport.

As a result of the law, numerous bus companies were founded, which, with a few exceptions, were initially unable to break the dominance of the state bus company National Express . However, the law had an impact on the national bus industry. The potential competition led to a need for heavier chassis that were better suited for the longer distances and higher cruising speeds. As a result, the market for smaller coaches collapsed almost completely. Manufacturers such as Bedford , Ford Thames or Duple Coachbuilders stopped producing such vehicles in the course of the 1980s, and some of them were closed.
