history

The Gotha district was formed from the Gotha district on 25 July 1952 as part of the administrative reform in the GDR . The municipality Crawinkel , which was previously in the district of Gotha, was transferred to the district of Arnstadt , the communities Neudietendorf , Apfelstädt , Kornhochheim , Ingersleben , Bischleben , Stedten an der Gera , Rhoda , Gamstädt , Töttelstädt , Bienstädt , Kleinfahner , Gierstädt , Großfahner and Döllstädt in the east of the district came to the district of Erfurt-Land or directly to the city of Erfurt (Bischleben, Rhoda and Stedten).

In the north of the Langensalza district came the communities: Herbsleben , Gräfentonna , Burgtonna , Uleben , Eckardtsleben , Aschara , Wiegleben , Tüngeda , Craula , Reichenbach am Hainich and Behringen . In addition, Kleinschmalkalden in the southwest was transferred to the Schmalkalden district and Oberhof in the south to the Suhl-Land district . The communities of Tröchtelborn , Mühlberg and Wandersleben , which were previously in the Erfurt district, came to the new district of Gotha .

This made the Gotha district much smaller than its predecessor, the Gotha district. The district town was Gotha , which lost its status as a district-free city at the same time as the district was formed .

Cities in the district included Gotha, Waltershausen , Ohrdruf , Tambach-Dietharz and Friedrichroda (all located on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest ). Neighboring districts were the Langensalza district in the north, the Erfurt-Land district in the east, the Arnstadt district in the southeast, the Suhl-Land district in the south, the Schmalkalden district in the southwest, the Bad Salzungen district in the west and the Eisenach district in the northwest.

In the north, the district was dominated by agriculture, while in the south, industry dominated (e.g. Multicar in Waltershausen). There was also significant tourism in the places of the Thuringian Forest (especially in Friedrichroda and Tabarz ).

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the district of Gotha.

In the course of the Thuringian municipal reform, the district of Gotha was dissolved on July 1, 1994. He went on in the new district of Gotha .
