About this picture

Gierstädt is a municipality in the Gotha district in Thuringia . It belongs to the administrative community Fahner Höhe .

Community structure

The districts of Gierstädt and Kleinfahner belong to the municipality of Gierstädt .

history

Gierstädt, together with Burgtonna, was part of the southern border of the Altgau Emperor Charlemagne . A document dated August 3, 775 reports how agriculture was carried out on small fields and how the forest had to be cleared beforehand. Gierstädt belonged to the domain of the Lords of Vanre . The name of the neighboring village Großfahner (Gross-Vanre) and Kleinfahner (Wenigen-Vanre) is derived from this. In 1412 the Lords of Seebach were given the loan to the two Fahner villages and Gierstädt, in 1434 Thilo von Seebach bought Groß- and Kleinfahner. From then until 1945 these goods remained in the hands of the family. From 1640 the place was part of the Fahner rule under the sovereignty of the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha and Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg .

The Thirty Years War brought a great deal of hardship and suffering to the places. In the subsequent reconstruction phase, the oldest half-timbered house still inhabited today was built in Gierstädt (1666).

In 1806 Napoleon's troops attacked the place and in the Wars of Liberation of 1813 they were sacked by Cossacks .

Fruit growing flourished in the region from 1791 . The Fahnersche Höhe became the "orchard of Thuringia".

Because of its idyllic location at the foot of the Fahner Höhe nature reserve, Gierstädt was already used for recreational purposes at the beginning of the 20th century. The outdoor pool, inaugurated in 1929, is one of the oldest in Thuringia. It was extensively renovated in 2004/05.

The occupation by US troops in April 1945 was followed in July by integration into the Soviet Occupation Zone (later GDR), with expropriations, land reform, forced collectivization and the establishment of the LPG. With successful fruit growing and processing, Gierstädt became a kind of model village in the GDR.

In 1986 Erich Honecker visited Gierstädt and planted an apple tree, which, however , was removed during the fall of the Wall .

After the turnaround and reunification , many houses were renovated, some in the old half-timbered style, but not a few are uniformly plastered and are increasingly covered with insulation panels. Modern new housing estates also emerged.

In the middle of October 2006 the commemorative event Fahner Höhe Biwak anno 1806 took place in the corridor of the Kleinfahner district . This commemorated the events of 1806, when around 20,000 French soldiers set up an army camp on the outskirts and completely plundered the village, which at that time had barely 200 inhabitants. In addition to a historical parade, the pastor Johann Volkmar Sickler was also thought of, who brought about the introduction of fruit growing in the Fahner Höhe.
