The Protestant St. Bonifatius Church in Gierstädt in the Gotha district ( Thuringia ) on the edge of the Fahner Höhe forest dates from the 19th century.
history
According to tradition , Boniface planted a linden tree in the town around 800 . The medieval previous church, which was located near the current building, had become dilapidated and was closed in 1843. In the years 1844–1846, the current church was built under the direction of the Gotha building officer Gustav Eberhard . The high tower with its crenellated crown and pointed helmet has a Gothic character, while the church was otherwise built in the Renaissance style. In 2002, the renovation work to preserve the tower could begin, the bells received an electric bell. During the GDR era, the brick wall was plastered; today, large parts of the walls are exposed again.
Interior decoration
Inside, the church has been preserved in its original condition from 1846. Nevertheless, the structural damage increased over time. The interior renovation is currently being prepared. The old cast iron ovens on either side of the altar are out of order. The organ is located on the first of two galleries on the east wall of the single-nave hall church .
organ
The organ of the St. Bonifatius Church was built in 1846 by the organ builder Friedrich Knauf from Groß-Tabarz (today part of Bad Tabarz ). The purely mechanical instrument has 25 stops on two manuals and a pedal . Probably during the First World War, the prospect pipes were removed and melted down. The missing pedal mechanism was replaced by wooden pipes on the back of the organ. The resulting gaps in the prospectus were covered with green fabric.
