history

St. Margarethen village church

In the year 1005 Eschenbergen was mentioned for the first time in a document of the monastery Göllingen as "Hessenberh". In the 13th century Eschenbergen was called a small "town". There was a large monastery "St. Nicholas" in the village. Growing of woad and grain as well as brewing beer were of particular importance. During the Thirty Years' War Eschenbergen was almost “razed to the ground” and only had 106 inhabitants. In 1683 the plague raged and killed 70 people. Until the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803, the place was divided into an Obergleichische district, which comprised 38 houses including the St. Margaret Church, and the lower district, which was under Saxon administration ( Gotha office ). The Obergleichische district belonged to this after the acquisition of the same rule Tonna in 1677 by Duke Friedrich I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg .

Eighteen Eschenbergen residents did not return from the First World War . In the 1930s, a military training area was set up near the place, mainly for the Air Force. During the Second World War, the women and the elderly took over the work of the drafted men, as well as French and Polish prisoners of war. The place took in many evacuees from the bomb war-prone West German cities. In April 1945 the place was occupied by US troops and at the beginning of July it was incorporated into the Soviet Zone . The population of Eschenbergen grew from 711 in 1939 to 1,056 in 1948 by taking in many expellees from the eastern regions. In the following years agriculture was collectivized. After 1990 Eschenbergen was included in the funding program for village renewal of the state of Thuringia. In addition, two new development areas were created.

Relief stone "Sancta Margareta 1584" (year of construction)
Foundation stone of the tower: Waidmühlstein
  • The construction of the Lutheran church “St. Margareten ”in the place then called Eschenberga took place in 1584. This is also attested by a relief stone in the church wall. Even older fragments go back to the Romanesque period. In 1618 the church received "170 fl. 12 gl. 3 pf." an organ from the workshop of Peter Völ (c) ker, which was renewed in 1753 by Johann Christian Hofmann. In 1841 a new church tower was built. A curiosity is the fact that a woad millstone was used as the foundation stone for the northwest corner of the tower. In 1842 the old church was demolished in order to erect a larger building in its place, whereby the old church tower was incorporated into the new church. The parish succeeded in completely renovating the tower in 2008, so that now a new hood and a golden star with a new weather vane shine over Eschenbergen, visible from afar.
  • The Seven Graves: On April 9, 1945 , young Wehrmacht soldiers dug foxholes for a defensive position on the Abtsberg of the Fahner Heights north of Eschenbergen on the boundary with Döllstädt . They were taken under fire by an American reconnaissance vehicle. Seven 17- and 18-year-olds died, the rest of the troop surrendered and were taken to the Bad Kreuznach prison camp . A seriously wounded man died on the transport. "Because of the condition of the body" the pastor decided that the fallen were not buried in the cemetery of Eschenbergen, but on the Abtsberg. Until 1953 there were seven crosses with the names of the soldiers, which were then replaced by a memorial. The stone bears a name plaque, entitled "FALLEN ON April 9, 1945".
