history

The Ballstädt corridor was settled in prehistoric times. Readings led to the discovery of a cremation burial site from the Roman Empire in 2003.

March 20, 1143 is mentioned as the (secured) first mention. Due to another mention from the year 822, the village celebrated a village festival as early as 1997 to mark the 1175th anniversary. The place was in the office of Gotha , which had belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha since 1640, to the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg since 1672 and to the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha since 1826 .

On January 1, 2019, the previously independent communities of Ballstädt, Brüheim , Bufleben , Friedrichswerth , Goldbach , Haina , Hochheim , Remstädt , Wangenheim , Warza and Westhausen were merged to form the rural community of Nessetal . • The fortified tower of the St. Petri Church is worth seeing . It emerged from a chapel in 1497. This can be seen from a plaque attached to the south wall of the church: On March 3, 1497 church renewed . In 1696 the church was renewed. At the same time it received a new organ, which was renewed again in 1836. In 1855 the church received a clock tower
  • The mills: The mill wheel in the coat of arms indicates the importance of the miller's trade for the village. Besides the windmill, there were also three water mills in Ballstädt . They were driven by the Tonna, a stream that rises on the southern edge of the village and flows into the Unstrut a few kilometers north . According to their location along the stream they were called Ober-, Mittel- and Untermühle. These names are still used today within the village, even if none of the three houses have preserved the mills. The lower mill has even been completely torn down.
  • A few hundred meters north of the village near the course of the Tonna stream (street: Am Eselsstieg ) there is a post mill . It was built in 1834 and moved from Hoheneggelsen to its current location in 1933 . Every year on German Milling Day (Whit Monday) it is open to the public. The mill is a protected cultural monument in the district of Gotha.
  • The Waidmühle: A document on the payment of "Waidgeld" shows that in Ballstädt since 1378 at the latest woad was grown and processed. A millstone from a woad mill has been preserved to the present day. In 2014, financed by private donations and public funds, the Waidmühle was fully functional and true to the original, but not at its original location. The opening ceremony and testing took place in the summer of 2015.
  • In the vicinity there are foothills of the Hainich , the Fahner Höhe , with extensive mixed forest and rich flora .
  • Not far from the church is the area of a former manor that was owned by Herrmann and Heinrich von Ballstädt between 1200 and 1500. After it became dilapidated, it was bought by the municipality in 2004 and demolished in 2005. Only the foundation walls and basement, which for visitors roadworthy were prepared, still reminiscent of the estate. The old pigeon house was renovated in 2006 with a new half-timbered building and a pond was created in front of it. The new park area was inaugurated on September 8, 2007.

Partner municipality

Ballstädt's partner community is Miehlen , a local community in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . The "Miehlener Platz" in the town center (actually Hauptstrasse 4 to 8) reminds of this.

economy

The economy consists only of small businesses. Since 1990 there have hardly been any farms left. The station north-west of the village is a stop on the Gotha – Leinefelde railway line and until 1947 was the terminus of the Ballstädt – Straussfurt railway line . In November 2008 Ballstädt became a participant in a pilot project to expand telecommunications technology in rural areas. It was by the telecommunications company Arcor a VDSL broadband internet access / decorated with a bandwidth of up to 50 Mbit s.

After the grocery store that emerged from a consumption closed a few years after reunification and the local bakery also gave up in 2014, there were no more shops in the village. Then in March 2015 the citizens' cooperative Konsum Ballstädt eG was founded , which renovated the grocery store and reopened it under the name Der neue Konsum in November 2015 as the first cooperative grocery store in Thuringia.
