history

Based on archaeological finds in the Wangenheimer Flur, it is assumed that people settled here as early as the Cord Ceramic and Bronze Ages . The village itself was first mentioned in 860 as the property of the Fulda monastery .

In 1133, the noble von Wangenheim family appeared in documents that shaped the development of the place in the late Middle Ages. Decisive for the fortified headquarters of the Wangenheim family in the village was probably the intersection of the north-south and east-west routes as well as the favorable natural and nutritional location. For the time being they were free, from 1395 they became ministerials of the Thuringian landgraves . This family was also the owner of Castle Winterstein from 1513 to 1560 and from 1370 owner of Castle Sonneborn . Wangenheim Castle was abandoned in the 16th century. In 1747 a kemenate-like building was demolished. Remnants of the complex are said to have been visible in the 18th century. After the two manors in the town went bankrupt, the Lords of Uechtritz (Fuga line) bought them in 1738. Wangenheim was still part of the Wangenheim court .

From the 17th century to 1920, the place belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha or its successor duchies . After that, the place part of the district Gotha and was from 1952 to 1990 for the county Gotha in the GDR - district of Erfurt .

On January 1, 2019, the previously independent municipalities of Wangenheim, Ballstädt , Bufleben , Friedrichswerth , Goldbach , Haina , Hochheim , Remstädt , Brüheim , Warza and Westhausen were merged to form the rural municipality of Nessetal .
