The Arado Ar 440 was a German high altitude fighter project of the Arado Flugzeugwerke during World War II .

history

The aircraft was developed as part of the Jäger procurement program 1943/44 on the basis of the Arado Ar 240 . For this purpose, all defensive armaments and the external load stations were removed from the Ar 240. The pressurized cabin for the two crew members was moved to the rear so that more offensive armament could be built into the bow. The front glazing was therefore omitted, as were the B and C stands. An umbrella-like air brake was attached to the stern to make the dive more controllable. The wings and the tail unit were taken over from the Ar 240. Two Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines with 1750 hp each were installed as drive . The Ar 240 A-04 served as a prototype for the Ar 440 and was tested in 1943/1944 by the Rechlin test center.

The project was discontinued at the end of 1944 because the increasingly scarce resources were now required for jet aircraft. There was no use.
