The Arado Ar 76 was a single-engine training and fighter aircraft that was built in Germany in the 1930s . The Ar 76 was based on an invitation to tender from 1933, in which the development of a light single-seater hunter was required, which should also be used as an advanced trainer. As a hunter ( home fighter ), the machine should be able to use two MG-17 machine guns and three 10 kg bombs.

development

At the end of 1934, the prototype Ar 76a designed by Walter Blume with a slightly V-shaped tailplane took off for its first flight. Like all Arado designs of that time, this one also had a vertical tail unit set forward to reduce the tendency to spin . After the crash of this machine, the Ar 76 V2 followed in spring 1935 with a straight horizontal stabilizer, the last prototype was the Ar 76 V3 . All three aircraft had devices for installing two MG 17 (250 rounds each) over the engine.

In the summer of 1935, the Ar 76 competed in a comparison flight against the Heinkel He 74 , the Focke-Wulf Fw 56 , the Henschel Hs 121 and the Henschel Hs 125 . Although it only achieved second place behind the Fw 56, a small series was produced by Arado Brandenburg from July 1935 to May 1936. A total of 189 aircraft were built.

technical description

The Ar 76 had a tubular steel fuselage with wooden form frames, the front part and the top cover were planked with light metal, the rest was covered with fabric. The entire structure was made of wood with fabric covering, the fixed tail wheel chassis was clad in a streamlined manner.
