Several Ar 66 at Malmi Airfield (1944, Finland)

The Arado Ar 66 was a single-engine school biplane for pilot training in the German Air Force .

development

The Arado Ar 66, created in 1932, was a single-handle double - decker . It had a strongly staggered structure . All areas had an 8 ° arrow shape. The horizontal stabilizer was well in front of the vertical stabilizer . Ing.Walter Rethel began with the construction of the aircraft as the last job for the Arado Flugzeugwerke . The revision of the construction to readiness for series production was carried out by his successor, Dipl.-Ing. Walter Blume .

variants

The first version was named Ar 66 A and differed only slightly from the later production version Ar 66 C. It still had high-pressure tires with a large diameter, a small-area rudder and an elevator without compensation surfaces. The registration of the work no. 78 took place as D-2335 in September 1932.

The Ar 66 B was the seaplane version of the Ar 66 C. On this version, the chassis was replaced by a float frame made of tubular steel with cable bracing. The float frame carried two wooden floats. About ten machines of this version were built and used for seaplane pilot training. Work no. 99; Registration: D-2557

The Ar 66 C (serial number 100, registration: D-2558) served as a series version of the Ar 66 A with a slightly modified tail and landing gear. From 1933 it was used in large numbers by the still secret air force for pilot training. The construction companies were the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW), Focke-Wulf , MIAG , AGO and Arado Brandenburg (ArB) and Warnemünde (ArW), but not all of them actually built the aircraft. 1,449 Ar 66s were produced between October 1933 and July 1937. At AGO 197 aircraft were probably built. The rest is divided into MIAG, ArB and ArW. A total of 1,456 Ar 66s have been built with prototypes. Six aircraft were exported to Spain in 1937. That remained the only exports of the Ar 66.

commitment

Most of the Ar 66 were used for pilot training. In addition, the machines were also used as night warplanes on the Eastern Front. The night battle groups 2, 3 and 5 as well as the night battle groups 8 in Finland and 12 in Latvia flew the Ar 66 C. The machines were equipped with mines or 2 kg or 4 kg bombs.
