The Arado Ar 198 was a German close-up aircraft made by Arado Flugzeugwerke .

development

The Ar 198 was developed after a tender by the Technical Office for a close-up reconnaissance aircraft in 1937/38 as a rival design to Blohm & Voss BV 141 and Focke-Wulf Fw 189 . The aircraft was a conventional, cantilevered, full- metal shoulder- wing wing . It was powered by a BMW Bramo 323 radial engine with 900 hp. A special feature was the fully glazed fuselage floor and the generously glazed canopy, which resulted in a very good all-round view. The crew consisted of a pilot, radio operator and observer. Due to the poorer flight performance of the Arado Ar 198 compared to the BV 141, only the prototypes ( aircraft registration D-ODLG (V1) and D-OHHS (V2)) were built in 1938. After the end of the trial, the V2 came to the German Aviation Collection in Berlin .
