The Arado Ar 65 was a biplane made by Arado Flugzeugwerke in 1931, which was designed as a fighter aircraft .
Development and history
The Arado Ar 65 was an enlarged version of the predecessor Ar 64 . Instead of the radial engine used there, a 750 hp BMW VI V-engine was used in the Ar 65 . The three prototypes Ar 65a, Ar 65b and Ar 65c had only minor structural differences.
The Ar 65d followed in 1933 as a series version. The vertical bomb bay for six bombs was no longer installed in the Ar 65e and Ar 65f variants .
The series models were introduced to the Luftwaffe on a large scale together with the predecessor Ar 64 . First, the hunting groups at the Döberitz and Jüterbog-Damm airfields were equipped. The 1st group of Jagdgeschwader 132 later emerged from the Döberitz group. Parts then formed the Jagdgeschwader 131, from which JG 2 "Richthofen" was eventually created.
In addition to its core task as a fighter aircraft, the Ar 65 was used to train fighter pilots. From 1933 to 1936, 85 Ar 65s were manufactured, 24 of which were licensed by Erla in Leipzig. In 1936 the pattern was replaced by the more modern Ar 68 and Heinkel He 51 . Twelve aircraft were delivered to the Royal Bulgarian Air Force in 1937 .
Production numbers
Series production of the Ar 65 began in September 1933 and ended in October 1935. The last 12 aircraft were built for sales to Bulgaria in December 1935 and January 1936.
