The Arado Ar 81 was a German Sturzkampfflugzeug the Arado aircraft plants .

development

The aircraft was developed on the basis of a tender from the Technical Office in the Reich Aviation Ministry from 1936 for a dive fighter aircraft that was supposed to attack point targets in a dive. In addition to the Arado Ar 81, the Heinkel He 118 and the Junkers Ju 87 , which won the comparison flight in 1936 , were also created in response to the tender . The tender for a light dive fighter aircraft, for which the Blohm & Voss Ha 137 , Fieseler Fi 98 and Henschel Hs 123 were developed, running almost simultaneously but completely independently of it , has nothing to do with this. However, both processes are often mixed up in the literature.

The Arado Ar 81 was designed as a two-seater double-decker in all-metal construction. The chassis was a rigid normal chassis with a tail wheel. A Junkers Jumo 210 C with 610 hp was used as the engine , which propelled a three-bladed controllable pitch propeller.

Due to the already outdated construction as a biplane, the Arado Ar 81 quickly fell behind in comparison flights. The three prototypes built differed slightly. The Ar 81 V1 (D-UJOX) and V2 (D-UPAR) received a double vertical tail to keep the field of fire to the rear clear. The V3 (D-UDEX), however, was equipped with a conventional tail unit.
