The federal highway 84 (abbreviation: B 84 ) is a German federal highway in Thuringia and Hesse . It begins in Ebeleben near Sondershausen and leads in a south-westerly direction via Bad Langensalza , Eisenach and Vacha to Hünfeld . The B 84 is mainly used for local traffic, as long-distance traffic can sometimes use parallel motorways ( A 4 / A 7 ). This does not apply to the section from Bad Langensalza to Eisenach, which is currently being expanded to improve the connection between the Unstrut-Hainich district and the A4. As a historic trunk road, the B 84 between Eisenach and Hünfeld was part of the Via Regia from Erfurt to Frankfurt am Main , which is why it is still called Frankfurter Straße in this section . The Werra Bridge Vacha is an important historical building on this old street .

course

The B 84 runs from Ebeleben on the Helbe southwards through the Thuringian Basin , through Bad Langensalza to Eisenach . Then it crosses the western foothills of the Thuringian Forest and continues via Vacha to Hesse, where it meets the federal highway 27 in Hünfeld and ends.

Reallocations

Due to excessive traffic, a bypass for Bad Langensalza was built between 2003 and 2008 , which bypasses the city to the south. This means that the B 84 has also been re-routed to part of the bypass and only affects the old town of Bad Langensalza. Another planned section, which completely relocates the B 84 out of the city, including the Merxleben district , has not yet been implemented.

In order to improve the accessibility of the cities of Bad Langensalza and Mühlhausen, the route between Bad Langensalza and the A 4 junction Eisenach-Ost is also to be expanded so that there is no construction. In the course of this, a bypass road is to be built around Behringen and Reichenbach.

In the urban area of Eisenach, the B 84 was relocated to the former route of the A 4 in 2010, on which it runs between the former motorway junctions Eisenach-Ost and Eisenach-West together with federal highway 19 .

Between Dorndorf and Vacha, the B 84 originally ran parallel to federal highway 62 on the north bank of the Werra via the Dorndorf district of Kirstingshof and the Vacha district of Oberzella . In 2007 this route was rededicated as a district road, since then the B 84 has run between the two places together with the B 62 south of the Werra.

In Hesse, the northern bypass of Hünfeld between the Burghaun and Hünfeld districts was completed on December 6, 2011 after almost five years of construction . This has reduced the load on the inner city area in Hünfeld by almost 50%.
