History / other

The federal highway 492 (part 1) was established in the early 1970s to improve the network of federal highways west of Ulm. In autumn 2007, the Schmiechen bypass near Schelklingen was completed, with the level crossings over the Ulm – Sigmaringen and Reutlingen – Schelklingen lines being removed. The construction time was five years.

The second part was not planned until the end of the 1980s, after the entire Federal Highway 7 had been completed. It is unclear why the number was reassigned here and not a different one. This second part of the B 492 initially led from the “Giengen / Herbrechtingen” junction of the A7 to Hermaringen. In 2012, south of Hermaringen, a section of the former L 1167 was upgraded to the B 492 and an extension of the B 492 to Bundesstraße 16 near Gundelfingen on the Danube was built in the course of the bypasses Brenz and Obermedlingen . The section between Hermaringen and Sontheim / Brenz will be renovated from May 2020 until the end of 2021.
