Medlingen is a municipality in the Swabian district of Dillingen an der Donau and a member of the administrative community Gundelfingen an der Donau .

Geographical location

Medlingen is located in the Danube Valley on the edge of the Swabian Alb , directly on the state border with Baden-Württemberg . Medlingen lies roughly in the middle of the district towns of Ulm , Dillingen an der Donau , Günzburg and Heidenheim an der Brenz .

Administrative community

In 1978 Medlingen was awarded the administrative community Gundelfingen an der Donau as part of the municipal regional reform . In addition to Medlingen and Gundelfingen , these include Haunsheim and Bächingen . The associated municipalities continue to be independent (their own mayor).

The administrative community (VG) has around 11,500 residents. The first mayor of the city of Gundelfingen is also the head of the VG.

history

The first mention of the name Maedlingen goes back to the year 1217, although it is not certain whether Obermedlingen or Untermedlingen was meant. The name means to the people of a Madilo . Obermedlingen was first mentioned in 1260, and the two villages were first distinguished in 1317 by adding the church patroness St. Radegund Maedlingen . Bottom Edlingen is then as Radgund-, Radgen-, cycling and Ratenmaedlingen or Nidermedlingen known before 1399 for the first time, the name under Edlingen fell.

In general, the history of both districts is closely linked to that of the Obermedlinger monastery .

Incorporations

In 1973 and 1974 the citizens of Obermedlingen and Untermedlingen voted in two secret votes for a merger of the two communities. The common name Medlingen was supported by a large majority. The final merger to form the unified municipality of Medlingen took effect on January 1, 1975.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018, the community grew from 832 to 1,021 by 189 inhabitants or 22.7%.

Municipal council

The municipal council has eight members. Since the 2014 local elections, the seats have been divided into the following lists:

Mayor has been Stefan Taglang (UWV) since 2002. On March 16, 2014, he was re-elected with 96.08% of the vote; on March 15, 2020, he received 96.6% of the votes.

The description of the coat of arms reads: Under the blue head of the shield, in it a silver dog jumping to the right with a golden torch in its mouth, cut diagonally from gold and red in pewter cut, three black deer tracks diagonally next to each other at the top.

  • Former monastery and collegiate church in Obermedlingen with an outstanding church tower that characterizes the town and landscape.

  • The several hundred years old, striking Bächinger Linden (but actually a mountain elm ) halfway between Obermedlingen and Bächingen was placed under special protection as a natural monument in 2003 .

Infrastructure

The A 7 motorway (approx. Ten minutes via the B 492 ) and the A 8 (approx. 15 minutes via the B 16) can be reached quickly and easily from Medlingen . The B 16 is about two kilometers away. Medlingen is not far from the district towns of Ulm (approx. 30 min), Heidenheim (approx. 15 min), Günzburg (approx. 15 min) and Dillingen (approx. 15 min).
