Benedict Holland , from 1817 Knight of Holland , OSB (also Benedikt or Benedickt ; * December 16, 1775 in Obermedlingen , † June 18, 1853 in Munich ) was a German priest and educator.

Live and act

Holland was born as the son of the "ox farmer" in Obermedlingen, then in Württemberg, studied in the Dominican monastery of Obermedlingen in Regensburg and in the imperial abbey of Neresheim , where he joined the Benedictine order in 1792. He was ordained a priest on May 1, 1799, and a year later he was promoted to professor of theology and director of the studying clergy, at the same time he became the monastery librarian.

Since the abbey was closed in 1802, during the secularization , Holland went to Salzburg as a professor of physics and logic. Just one year later he returned to Neresheim to help found the Fürstlich Thurn- und Taxis'schen Lyceum Carolinum , which Karl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis founded. In 1806 he moved to the seminar in Neuburg an der Donau as director , where he also worked as a professor of philosophy.

In 1811, Holland was appointed director of the now reformatory Royal in Munich, until 1773 run by the Jesuits "Domus Gregoriana" which, from now on, derived from his name as Hollandeum became known. In this function he worked a. a. as the tutor of the future Duke Max Joseph in Bavaria , as many well-known people later attended the boarding school. In 1817 Holland received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , combined with the personal title of nobility. On October 26, 1824, at his own request, he was released from the management of the institution, was appointed senior teacher and the priest Johann Evangelist Paintner succeeded him as director. In 1825 he was awarded the Knight of Honor Cross of the Order of St. Michael . In 1826 Benedict von Holland retired.

The clergyman was valued as a teacher and humanist as well as a musician and poet. He died on June 18, 1853 and was buried in the Old Southern Cemetery in Munich . The tomb was created by the sculptor Johann von Halbig on behalf of Duke Maximilian in Bavaria.

In addition to a history of the Lyceum zu Neresheim, the educational institute in Munich and an autobiography, his estate also includes numerous sketches, speeches and poems.

The educational institution headed by Benedict von Holland has been in Munich since 1905 under the name "Albertinum" , and it is still under the protectorate of the former royal family, the House of Wittelsbach . From 1824 it was connected to the Ludwigsgymnasium , which could also be attended by external students.

Benedict von Hollands nephew was the historian Hyacinth Holland (1827-1918), son of his brother Christoph Holland (1782-1845), district and city court director in Munich.
