Józef Simmler
Józef Simmler (born March 14, 1823 in Warsaw ; † March 1, 1868 ibid) was a Polish painter with a German migration background (the family came from Germany), a representative of realism , who depicted motifs from Poland and Polish history in the classical style .
Józef Simmler studied at the Dresden Art Academy , then from December 23, 1841 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich . In 1842 he fell ill with meningitis . After a spa stay with his family in Switzerland, he returned to Munich to continue his studies. In 1843 he became a member of the Munich Art Association .
In 1844 he came back to Dresden to study with Eduard Bendemann . In 1845 he came to Warsaw, 1847 to Paris. In 1849 he settled in Warsaw, in 1850 he married Julia Högensteller from Munich.
Religious motifs and historical portraits predominate in his work. Perhaps his best-known work is The Death of Barbara Radziwiłł ( Śmierć Barbary Radziwiłłówny ), an oil painting on canvas completed in 1860 . It hangs today in the National Museum in Warsaw.
