The federal highway 431 (abbreviation: B 431 ) is a federal highway in northern Germany . It leads from Hamburg-Altona to Meldorf in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

The federal road 431 was only established in the 1970s, although the associated roads were built as artificial roads ( Chausseen ) as early as the 19th century . The section between Uetersen and Elmshorn, on the other hand, is based on an old military route from the 12th century. The westernmost section of the route between Meldorf and Itzehoe was built in 1855 and was later interrupted by the Kiel Canal .

course

The B 431 begins in the Hamburg-Altona-Nord district on Bundesstraße 4 in the immediate vicinity of the Holsten brewery . It leads in a westerly direction over the A 7 motorway (motorway exit 28 “ Hamburg-Bahrenfeld ”) through the Elbe suburbs in the Altona district , whose main traffic axis it forms, to Wedel (Schleswig-Holstein).

Between Sülldorf and Rissen , it has been developed as an expressway since November 1984 (with a speed limit of max. 80 km / h) and runs parallel to the S1 line of the Hamburg S-Bahn . This route is known as the "Rissen Canyon". It relieves the Rissen thoroughfare, which has been traffic-calmed.

The B 431 leads north through the narrow streets of Wedel old town through Holm , Heist and Moorrege . Shortly afterwards, after the overpass over the Pinnau in Uetersen, it bends westwards, and then continues northwards at the Geestrand near the former district hospital . It reaches Elmshorn via Groß- and Klein Nordende .

The B 431 now heads west to Glückstadt in the Steinburg district and continues over the Stör barrage to Brokdorf , which is known for its nuclear power plant . North of Sankt Margarethen , the road meets Bundesstraße 5 in a driveway . The former common route of federal highways 5 and 431 to Bekdorf bei Wilster was abandoned a few years ago and the B 431 between Bekdorf via Hochdonn (ferry) to Nindorf east of Meldorf to a state road. The B 431 now leads from Meldorf (B 5) via Nindorf to the Albersdorf motorway junction on the A 23 .

Planning

Plans called for the section after the motor road in Hamburg-Rissen to be relocated to a more southerly route, in particular to bypass Wedel. This is intended to ensure the calming of the Wedel through traffic, which was laid down in the Wedel planning in 1982. The route is planned through the Wedeler Au and Wedeler Marsch up to the Geest to Holmer Straße at the eastern exit of Wedels. The “reserve areas” can be seen on the left hand side of the B 431 coming from Wedel at the beginning of Holmer Straße due to their sloping course.

From there, the B 431 is to connect to the previous route. As a result, it would have four lanes in the west of Hamburg and in the Wedel bypass and remove a bottleneck in through traffic. The project is still being planned for the construction of the trunk road.

In March 2011, the Wedel City Council decided on a bypass along the northern outskirts of Wedel (so-called Wedels northern bypass) and applied for the planning approval procedure to the responsible ministry in Kiel. The B 431 is to lead on the northern outskirts of Wedels over the street Autal and the Breiten Weg into the Pinneberger Straße and at the junction Flerrentwiete / Steinberg over the Voßhörntwiete to the Holmer Straße. Wedel therefore prefers a bypass that protects the Wedel and Hetlinger marshland from road construction and offers Wedel the same degree of calming through the town as the originally planned bypass south around Wedel. The decision in Kiel is still pending. The Wedel council decision was preceded by a long discussion between residents and those responsible for politics.
