Between its start at Riebeckplatz in Halle and the railway underpass on Merseburger Geiseltalstrasse, the B 91 has four lanes with maximum permissible speeds of between 50 and 100 km / h. The two branches of the new ICE line Halle / Leipzig-Erfurt-Nuremberg cross the street in the Saale-Elster-Aue near Planena near the Kollenbeyer Weg tram stop on bridges. The old route through Schkopau and Merseburg was given up in the 1970s in favor of the new route along the Buna works . Similarly, in 1997 the Weißenfels through-road was replaced by a bypass road.
Two other short four-lane sections are located at the Leuna-Werk junction, where the 2174 district road crosses, and at the level of the Bäumchen district, where there is a junction with the A 38 . Since 1997, a four-lane bypass around Weißenfels has led to the Weißenfels junction with the A 9 . The Zeitz bypass is crossed at the beginning of Zeitz. The B 91 joins the B 2 in Zeitz-Aylsdorf at the Grüne Aue junction.
The largely straight course of the original route over long stretches is striking. The route is clearly aligned in places to the church towers, for example from Riebeckplatz to the church in Ammendorf and from Weißenfels to Merseburg to the Sixti church. The old route through Schkopau and Merseburg and the sections between Weißenfels and Deuben as well as between Deuben and Zeitz also run dead straight without compromising the topography.
